WHITES OUT TO SPOIL NORTHS REUNION
At ANU North Oval this Saturday, the Owls are celebrating the Norths 1971 grand final win over the Whites. On the day Norths defeated us 8-3. Queanbeyan went into the GF having won our previous 8 games, conceding only 3 tries.
Our coach that year was Peter Morton
Our team was: Alan Webber, Robert Stumbles, Don Loxton, Graham Hughes, Offa Tahi, Dennis Debenham (capt), Supi Fotu, Charlie Kapukapu, John Tumataroa, Phill Hawke, Noel Vickery, Richard Moncrieff, Bob Latukefu, Brian Kingi, Jim Cribb,
Norths team included two former wallabies - Ian Procter and Owen Butler
As reward for beating minor premiers, Royals (Kim Thurbon was in this team) in the semi final, first grade were excused from training on Sunday morning but on the Wednesday they had a road run from the Burra turn off on Old Cooma Road back to the rugby Club (12km).
Some in the media called us Queanbeyan's 'United Nations' as we "managed to blend the styles of players from three countries - Australia, New Zealand and Tonga"
Missing from the grand final team was John Moore who won the first grade Best Forward trophy that year but was unable to play in the GF due to a car accident in the week leading into the game.
